"Just a Question"

We know that the "Great Commission tells us to baptize in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Ghost. In the book of Acts Peter baptizes in the "Name of Jesus."

Peter was never rebuked for baptizing in Jesus name therefore it was not wrong in the eyes of God. So why don't we? Why don't baptist baptize in the name of Jesus? Why do we lift our hand and say the words we say? Why not just say, "We baptize you in the Name of Jesus?"

  1. Did Peter actually baptize in the name of Jesus, or did he just preach to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ in Acts 2?

In Acts 10, Peter commanded that Cornelius and his household be baptized in the name of the Lord, but given the context of the authorship, perhaps that was a reference to the Trinity.

Good question. My answer is that we baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost because Jesus Himself instructed it be done so. As for what to do about Peter, I'd just regard that as historical record and not a directive.

  2. The argument is that the "name" of the son is Jesus. So let's say "I baptize in the name of Jehovah, Jesus, and the Holy Ghost." Just kidding of course. Good question.

  3. On second thought, since it is a picture of Jesus anyway, and if we teach people that it is, isn't it really in His name?
